6 Creative Games To Play With Simple Wooden Blocks

Wooden blocks have been a childhood staple for generations—and for good reason. They’re often one of the first toys we bring home for our kids, and at Marley & Moose, we’re big believers in their magic.

These simple toys support open-ended, imaginative play while building important skills like coordination, problem-solving, and fine motor development. And yes, fine motor skills are—pun fully intended—the building blocks for writing, drawing, and so much more down the road.

No more dad (mom?) jokes. (Okay, no promises.)

Here are 6 kid-approved, super fun ways to play with wooden blocks—and get the most out of every stack, tumble, and tower.

Castle Copy Build

What you need:
Just wooden blocks! The only must-have is making sure you have at least two of every type of block.

How to play:
This one is a go-to favorite in our house with both a three-year-old and a six-year-old. Each player gets their own building zone and an identical set of blocks. Then, you take turns: one player places a block, and the other has to mirror it exactly in their space.

The result? Two matching “castles”—and a whole lot of fun.

This simple game is fantastic for building spatial awareness, basic geometry concepts, and turn-taking skills. Plus, there’s no winner or loser—just cooperative play that encourages focus, observation, and a little creative flair. Think of it like a shape sorter, leveled up.

You can level it up by building a complete castle on each turn and then building it all in one go instead of piece by piece.

Sorting Game

What you need:
Wooden blocks. That’s it! (Notice a theme here?)

How to play:
Perfect for toddlers around two or three, or any child beginning to recognize shapes, colors, and numbers. Just grab a handful of blocks and invite your child to sort them in different ways. You can sort by shape, color, or group them in sets of three or four to start introducing counting.

Here’s the fun part: being able to count “four blocks” is one skill, but recognizing a “group of four” just by looking is a whole other level.

Want to take it further? Use this game to introduce simple math ideas like addition and subtraction. For example, say, “If I have three blocks here and take away one, how many are left?” It’s a playful way to build early math thinking with just a handful of blocks.

Tangrams

What you need:
You guessed it—wooden blocks! For this game, it helps to have a shape to work with, like a piece of paper, cardboard, or even shapes taped on the floor.

How to play:
You don’t need official tangrams to play tangrams, and there are countless ways to play! But we do really love this Wooden Set & cards from Grimm’s.

Option 1:
Start by choosing a shape—maybe a rectangle cut from paper or a square taped on the floor. Say, “We’re starting with this rectangle.” Then challenge your child to fill the shape as completely as possible using the blocks—no coloring outside the lines, just careful placing!

Option 2:
Think of an animal, building, or any object you like. Use your blocks to build that shape or figure. Encourage creativity and imagination—it’s all about seeing what you can make!

Maze Game!

What you need:
Wooden blocks- Jenga blocks were particularly well!

How to play:
Start by building a maze with the blocks acting as walls. Then, have fun navigating the maze using toy cars or little characters.

A great tip for this and all the games here: model building the maze yourself first to show how it works, then let your child create their own maze. It’s a fantastic way to spark creativity and problem-solving!

Rube Goldberg / Marble Run

What you need:
Pretty much anything you can find around the house!

How to play:
At its simplest, this game is all about creating a marble run. Build a castle or structure with your wooden blocks, then use toilet paper or paper towel rolls as tunnels for marbles to roll through.

We carry a marble run set perfect for older kids (and even adults!) that can be part of this fun experiment. It’s likely too tricky for little ones, but don’t worry—there are plenty of simple options at home.

If your child’s fine motor skills are up for it, add some dominoes to the mix for extra excitement and cause-and-effect fun!

Build a ________ [castle, garage, airport, etc] With Wooden Blocks

What you need:
Wooden blocks—and anything else you have around that sparks creativity. We love adding matchbox cars, toy animals, or small figures to the mix.

How to play:
This is your child’s chance to let their imagination run wild. There are no rules, no “right” way to play, and no expectations—just open-ended fun.

You can gently encourage creativity by introducing a new toy. Maybe there’s a toy airplane nearby? See if your child builds a runway, an airport, or even a jungle where the plane can “land.” Ask open-ended questions about their creation—like “Tell me about this part!”—but avoid being too directive so their imagination stays front and center.

And for pure joy? Challenge your little one to build the tallest tower possible… then, of course, let them have a blast knocking it down!

Wooden blocks are such a simple, timeless way to spark creativity, learning, and connection with your little ones. We hope these games inspire you to build, explore, and play together in new and joyful ways. Have fun trying them out—and don’t forget to share your block masterpieces with us!
